Walk

I am starting on time today. Unfortunately, that also means that everything is still closed. So I have to do with the water that I still have. That should, however, be sufficient until Lamorna, where there is a café.

During the first part, it immediately goes over narrow paths that are completely overgrown. Not to knee height or so, no to above my head. On some parts it is so overgrown that the path is no longer visible, only a vague impression in the vegetation. If my predecessor had walked off the cliff, I would have followed…
The other disadvantage is that everything is still wet from the dew (that’s what you get when you leave so early). So I am, in no time, soaking wet, from head to toe. Fortunately, that also dries quickly later in the sun and with the sea breeze.

After the overgrown part I come across ponies again. They are once again in the middle of the path. But when I ask nicely, they go aside. Who said life is not a pony camp?

After St Loy’s Cove, the paths are still narrow, but they have been mowed. Just before Carn Barges I come across the mowers. I thank them for the good work they do and they like that.

Around Lamorna the Coast Path is hard work, a very uneven path, climbing and occasionally dangerously close to the edge.
In Lamorna I find the cafe (which is not that difficult, it is on the Coast Path and Lamorna is not that big). Time for a break with a very tasty (and delicious cold) soda from Franklin & Sons Ltd and supplementing the water supply.

From Lamorna to Penzer Point it is still working hard and then a nice relaxed part of Coast Path follows. In Mousehole I take a short break with a can of juice on a bench along the harbor.
After that, everything goes on or along roads and mainly through the buildings, until Penzance. Here I walk all the way to the harbor and there I enjoy a Guinness at the Dolphin Tavern.

Then I look for my Guesthouse, time for a shower …

In Penzance there is an aircraft carrier off the coast. I could already see that from afar. Some research has shown that it is the HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the new showpieces of the British Navy (there are two of them, the other is called HMS Prince of Wales). The vessel was made ready for shipping in 2017 and must be fully operational by 2020. When the time comes, it offers room for about 1600 people (crew and troops) and there is room for 40 (maximum 50) aircrafts. Cost about 4 billion.
I can appreciate that they have sent the HMS Queen Elizabeth to welcome me in Penzance. But that really wasn’t necessary…

Weather

Beautiful weather again today, sunny and dry. Warm, but not too hot.

Lyric of the day

Let’s hope that the deployment of the HMS Queen Elizabeth (and her brother) is limited to peace missions and the prevention of war instead of war. That’s why today I chose one of the most popular protest songs ever, War by Edwin Star (the younger people among us might better know the performances of Frankie Goes to Hollywood or Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band):

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y’all

War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

Ohhh, war, I despise
Because it means destruction
Of innocent lives

War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives

I said, war, huh
Good God, y’all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain’t nothing
But a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Ooooh, war
It’s an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die
Aaaaah, war-huh
Good God y’all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again y’all
War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War, it’s got one friend
That’s the undertaker
Ooooh, war, has shattered
Many a young mans dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious
To spend fighting wars these days
War can’t give life
It can only take it away

Ooooh, war, huh
Good God y’all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again

War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me

War, it ain’t nothing but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Peace, love and understanding
Tell me, is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there’s got to be a better way

Ooooooh, war, huh
Good God y’all
What is it good for
You tell me
Say it, say it, say it, say it

War, huh
Good God y’all
What is it good for
Stand up and shout it
Nothing
